Waterloo Village is a restored 19th-century canal town in Byram Township, Sussex County (west of Stanhope) in northwestern New Jersey, United States. The community was approximately the half-way point in the roughly 102-mile (165 km) trip along the Morris Canal, which ran from Jersey City (across the Hudson River from Manhattan, New York) to Phillipsburg, New Jersey, (across the Delaware River from Easton, Pennsylvania). Waterloo possessed all the accommodations necessary to service the needs of a canal operation, including an inn, a general store, a church, a blacksmith shop (to service the mules on the canal), and a watermill. For canal workers, Waterloo’s geographic location would have been conducive to being an overnight stopover point on the two-day trip between Phillipsburg and Jersey City. It is currently an open-air museum in Allamuchy Mountain State Park. As part of the State Park, it is open to the public from sunrise to sunset. The village is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Description courtesy Wikipedia

Since opening, we have believed in making the best quality of food with the freshest of ingredients. We pride ourselves in our homemade dishes and desserts. It is our number one priority for our customers to have an enjoyable experience from the minute they walk in, until the moment they leave, along with a delicious meal. Not only do we serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, Monday thru Saturday, but we also cater to any party or event with our private banquet room. Homer, a former Navy Seabee, instilled in us a deep appreciation and respect for our service men and women. We have taken the front wall of our entrance to dedicate to all our local heroes, and a wall in the dining room to dedicate to our local veterans. The Homer’s family and staff have a strong support for our military troops and thank each and every soldier for their duty.

Built in 1765, the courthouse was the site of a daring raid during the American Revolution by one of the Loyalists’ best operatives, Lieutenant James Moody. In 1780, Moody led several men to free eight Loyalist prisoners held in the Sussex County Courthouse. Moody freed the men and fled with them. Despite a pursuit lasting several days, Revolutionary forces failed to capture them. The court was gutted by fire in 1847 and rebuilt within the original walls and structure. It continues to handle judicial proceedings in conjunction with a newer facility. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 23, 1979. description via Wikipedia Article from the New York Times, April 24, 1880

Andersen Farms is a family owned and operated business. We started our business in 2003 with one greenhouse and the idea to grow the best-tasting tomatoes around. Ten hard worked years later our business has grown by leaps and bounds….and so has our family! A note from the farmer’s wife: “Sell your house and buy a farm, dad!” Unlike many of the other local farms in our area, our farm has not been in our family for generations. In fact, we are pretty new at what we do and are learning new things every day. My husband, Tor Andersen, (not Tom or Thor or Tory…just plain old 3-letter Tor), had always wanted to farm for a living and after getting his college degree he somehow convinced his parents Max & Carla to sell their house in Lafayette and buy a farm in Frankford. Needless to say, his parents are extremely supportive, hard-working people, and we are grateful for their partnership. Little did I know that marrying my high school sweetheart would lead me to the “roll” of farmer’s wife. Nor did I ever imagine the long hours, busy seasons, four beautiful daughters, ever changing, fulfilling, life that we would lead. […]

Lusscroft Farm is iconic of our vanishing rural heritage, holding a unique place in the Garden State’s agricultural history. It embraces some of our most inspiring scenic vistas, intriguing geology and interesting topography. The property is located on Neilson Road in Wantage Township, New Jersey and contains 23 buildings including the Turner Mansion (a.k.a. Manorhouse), the Manager’s Dwelling, the spectacular Outlook Lodge and the dairy barn and farm structures. The land includes fields and pastures, ponds, woodland and various barnyards. It has a promising potential for passive recreational and educational activities If its attributes were sympathetically enhanced and properly marketed, then Lusscroft could become a thriving destination in the growing market for agri-tourism, eco-tourism, and heritage tourism. The Heritage and Agriculture Association (H & AA) is working to stabilize and then restore the neglected buildings of this agriculturally significant gem. The goal of the association, as stated in a Memorandum of Understanding with the NJDEP is to create and maintain an agricultural heritage center with emphasis and opportunities for education in the dairy industry, outdoor recreation, historical interpretation, equine trails, heirloom gardening, forestry, maple sugaring, and all phases of farming from organic gardening to marketing value added products.

The tunnel was built in 1871 by the Midland Railway Line in order to cross the Wallkill Valley. New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway took over control of the tunnel in 1881 when the Midland Railway Line was merged into it. The tunnel was first referenced as the Backwards Tunnel in 1976 because it was thought that the tunnel should have been wider over the road than over the river. Ogdensburg declared the tunnel a borough historic site in 1991. A flood in 2000 which caused two nearby dams to burst damaged the tunnel. A book was published in 2009 about the history of the tunnel. Did you know that Sussex County is home to a volcano? Rutan Hill, also known as Volcanic Hill, is located in the Beemerville section of Wantage Township. The volcano has been inactive for 440 million years, and now disappears into the landscape of beautiful Sussex County. The site is well-regarded by geologists due to the presence of a rare type of igneous rock called nepheline syenite which can be found at the site. …in northern Sussex County 11/2 miles west of Libertyville, a circular hill of trap rock, a quarter of a mile in diameter, in which are included many fragments of granite, slate and limestone, presents some characteristics of a volcanic plug, the trap rock with the included fragments representing the lava which solidified deep in the throat of the volcanic cone, which may once have marked this site. This vent, is however, so far removed from the great lava flows of the Newark series, and is so small in comparison with them, that it can hardly be regarded as their source. The fissure or throat of which these floods of lava came more probably lies beneath the parts of the sheets not yet exposed to view. -“The Geology […]

Nine miles in length and covered by 2,500 acres of freshwater, Lake Hopatcong is the focal point of the park. Hopatcong State Park is at the southwest end of the lake and is a popular spot for fishing, boating, and swimming. Lake Hopatcong was originally created as part of the Morris Canal, a 90-mile waterway that ran from Newark to Phillipsburg and was the chief means of transporting coal, iron and zinc across New Jersey in the 1860s. The lake was the canal’s major source of water. In 1866, over 880,000 tons of freight was transported on the canal. However, as the more efficient Morris and Essex Railroad was established, the canal was abandoned. The historical museum is located in the old Morris Canal locktender’s house and offers exhibits on local American Indian history, the Morris Canal and the history of the lake.

Windy Brow, named for its windy location on the brow of the ridge, was originally operated as a dairy farm dating back to the late 1800s. The first fruit trees were planted by the Inslee family in 1920. When the original dairy barn was destroyed by fire in the 1940s, the Inslee’s decided to concentrate on fruit growing. Many of the original trees are still bearing fruit today. The packing house and farm store established in 1946 are still in operation. The present proprietors, Jim and Linda Hunt, purchased the farm in 2000, and look to their local roots in agriculture to guide them as they continue the family tradition of farming in the Garden State. In 2013, their son Jake returned to the farm to start The Cow’s Brow Creamery, and assist with other expansion efforts, both on the retail and agricultural sides of the business. Their love of the land and strong sense of community service are evident as you gaze around the orchard and country store.

Glacial lakes, limestone outcroppings, former railroads, and a small airport are features of Kittatinny Valley State Park. Lake Aeroflex and Gardner’s Pond form part of the headwaters of the Pequest River and are excellent for fishing and boating. This scenic property is home to a variety of wildlife such as whitetail deer, wild turkey, a variety of songbirds, beaver, muskrats, and squirrels. Hunting, hiking, mountain biking, birding, and horseback riding are popular activities. The four lakes offer fishing, boating, and kayaking opportunities. The Paulinskill Valley Trail and the Sussex Branch Trail are former railroads that have been converted for use as multiple use trails. Both railroads were critical to the development of Sussex County through the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. The wide cinder surface is ideal for walking, running, mountain biking, and horseback riding. When snow conditions are abundant, these trails provide and excellent opportunity for cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. You might even see a musher and his dogsled team running down the trail!

Some of the most rugged terrain and splendid views of northern New Jersey are found in Worthington State Forest. A rocky and sometimes steep trail follows Dunnfield Creek from the Delaware River to Mount Tammany or hikers may choose to follow the trail to Sunfish Pond, one of the most popular sites in the area. Millions of years in the making, the pond was carved out by glacial forces during the last ice age and is one of fourteen rock-basin lakes between the Delaware Water Gap and the end of Kittatinny Ridge. A trail circles the pond, with many boulders and openings for resting and observation.

Built in 1910 as Ogdensburg’s fifth public school, it was adapted for re-use in 1930 as the Borough’s first firehouse. In 1989, with the aid of two state grants, the Ogdensburg Historical Society adapted it for re-use and dedicated it as the Old Schoolhouse and Firehouse Museum. After 97 years, the Museum continues to serve the Borough of Ogdensburg as an historical learning and preservation center, and as a meeting hall. On June 10, 2006 it was dedicated as an Ogdensburg Historic Site. The museum’s first floor lobby holds a display case of minerals from the Ogdensburg’s Zinc Mine that was originally in the grade school. The fire truck bays contain the Ogdensburg Fire Department’s retired 1935 and 1959 American La France pumper trucks. These fire trucks can still be seen at parades. In June of 2006, the bays were dedicated in memory of William “Doly” Dolan and Joseph Fitzgibbons Sr.. These men were former students, OFD fire chiefs, and OHS charter members and vice-presidents all within the walls of this building. We will be adding more OFD memorabilia in the future. The second floor serves as a meeting hall for the society’s meetings and its showcases hold donated Ogdensburg […]

The view from High Point Monument, at 1,803 feet above sea level, is a spectacular panorama of rich farmland and forest, soft hills and lush valleys in three states. The blue line of the Delaware River divides the verdant ridges of New Jersey from those of Pennsylvania. High Point offers superb trails for hikers and skiers and quiet spots for campers and anglers. The land for High Point State Park, donated by Colonel Anthony R. and Susie Dryden Kuser, was dedicated as a park in 1923. The pleasant landscaping was designed by the Olmsted Brothers of Boston, a prominent landscape architectural firm of that time. The brothers were the sons of the eminent Frederick Law Olmsted, who designed Central Park.

Welcome to the Last Great American Roadhouse! The Stanhope House is a historic New Jersey concert venue housing live performances by popular national artists, up-and-coming local bands and comedians. There’s something for everyone here at the Stanhope House; blues, rock, jazz, folk, reggae, comedy, pop, hip-hop, ska, hardcore, dance and everything in between! If walls could talk, the old walls of The Stanhope House would have some unbelievable stories to tell. Built in the 1790’s, we take great pride in keeping the building as original as possible. From the wood floors to the original tin ceiling, and everything in between, the building is a time capsule of musical history. The club was the stomping grounds and post-show hangout of a massive array of beloved blues legends. When you come to an event at The Stanhope House, you will be gazing upon the same stage where Muddy Waters, Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Buddy Guy, Paul Butterfield, and John Lee Hooker had all once stood. We continue making history today as John Mayall, James Cotton, Joan Osborne, Rusted Root, The Original Wailers, Rakim, Mobb Deep, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Fishbone, Taproot, Aaron Carter, Gilbert Gottfried, and Judy Gold take the stage, just to name a […]
